Tones are a central part of any tone language. The culture of every society or group is imbibed in the language spoken by such a community or group. This research work looks at the influence of tones on the features of Tiv language. The main objective of this research is to look at the effects of tones on the segmental and supra-segmental features of Tivlanguge. The researcher in this work strives to define the concept of tone(s), and reveals the salient features and relationships between segmental and supra-segmentals, analyse some theories that explain the concept of tone(s) and finally draws examples from Tiv language to back up the claim. The data for the study was collected using oral interviews. The findings shows that tone(s) is an important feature of Tiv language and is of paramount importance grammatically. Based on these findings, the following recommendations were made, that the government, educational and traditional institutions should encourage the use of language in all spheres of the society, so as to help develop the languages in spheres which were hitherto not developed.
